Terms and Abbreviations
A2H:
America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network is a national network of 200 food banks and food rescue operations. Connecticut Food Bank is a member of America’s Second Harvest.
Branch:
Owned and operated by Connecticut Food Bank. CFB Branches are in Fairfield and Waterbury.
Buying Club:
Food we buy at wholesale and resell to member agencies.
CBP:
Connecticut Food Bank – Boston Food Bank Partnership. The two food banks work closely together, often sharing product loads. CFB staffs the coordinator and CBP splits the cost.

Commodities:
Foods purchased by USDA to feed people in need.
DSS:
Department of Social Services. DSS administers The Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
FEMA:
Federal Emergency Management Agency. CFB is a fiscal agent for small local agencies who can access some federal dollars through FEMA.
501(c)3:
A private not-for-profit corporation with charitable intent as described by Section 501(c)3 of the IRS code. A subsection of this rule restricts the distribution of donated foods by the food bank to only those described under 501(c)3.
Food Insecurity:
The lack of access to enough food to fully meet basic needs at all times.
FRO:
Food Rescue Operation
Hunger:
The mental and physical condition that comes from not eating enough food due to insufficient economic, family or community resources.
SDO:
Subsidiary Distribution Organization. The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in Stamford and the Gemma E. Moran United Way / Labor Food Center in New London are SDOs of Connecticut Food Bank.
SNAP:
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. State and federal dollars are allocated to buy high-protein foods.
Salvage:
Damaged packages (dented cans, crushed boxes) from retail store that still have good product inside them.
Service Area:
A food bank’s designated geographical area in which they are responsible for providing product to their agencies, as well as for product solicitation within those boundaries. CFB’s six county service area consists of Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham Counties.
TEFAP:
The Emergency Food Assistance Program. Federal dollars are allocated to cover the cost of warehousing and distributing USDA commodities.
