Gerry Borgerson
Retired marriage and family therapist Gerry Borgerson is a wife, mother, and grandmother of three who was born, raised and educated in Connecticut. She and her husband, “Skip,” will celebrate their 49th anniversary this summer.
Gerry Borgerson has always felt blessed in her own life and has desired to help bless others in return. Through the years, she has been active with her local Parent-Teacher Organization and her church, as well as with other community groups and activities. In the middle of a bitter cold snap in February 2005, Gerry spent several days volunteering with Heifer International high up on Overlook Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts. Her group was asked to monitor the vital statistics of pregnant female goats every hour, day and night. When a goat went into labor, the volunteers summoned staff and then assisted with the birthing process. Once the babies were born the volunteers had to snuggle the tiny “kids” inside their jackets to keep them warm and protect them from the frigid weather.
Here at Connecticut Food Bank, you will find Gerry and other members of the Quota Club of New Haven in the Kids’ BackPack room on the second and fourth Tuesday morning of the month as they pack bags with nutritious food. The Quota Club is an international service club that focuses on helping disadvantaged women and assisting the hearing impaired. To fulfill a local community service component, they adopted the Kids’ BackPack Program two years ago. CFB’s BackPack Program works with local schools to provide child-friendly, wholesome food to students at-risk of hunger during weekends.
Gerry’s volunteer work at Connecticut Food Bank is in a climate controlled room and not in a barn high on a blustery hilltop. Still, like the grandmother who knows the importance of loving and cuddling little ones, twice a month, in her own way, she snuggles countless “kids” she will never know through her work with the Kids’ BackPack Program.
Gerry and her husband now live in Branford with their dog, Sammy Wiggles. She loves tennis, bowling, walking by the water and, of course, “kids!”
