Programs:
Meat the Need
Protein is one of the items most requested by the food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and residential programs served by Connecticut Food Bank. One way CFB fulfills this request is via the Meat the Need program.
Partnership
Begun in 2005, Meat the Need is a partnership between CFB and several grocery store chains which provides thousands of pounds of wholesome and nutritious meat to programs in the six counties served by CFB. Currently, Shaw's Supermarkets, Stop & Shop Supermarkets, and Trader Joe's are all partners in the Meat the Need program
How The Program Works
Meat that has not been sold by the label's "Sell By" date is removed from the meat case and frozen. A CFB driver picks up the frozen meat and brings it back to our East Haven warehouse where it is sorted. It is then distributed to our member programs, providing much needed protein to people in need.
Looking Ahead
Meat the Need is expanding to include other types of food. We currently receive produce, baked goods, and frozen foods from some of our participating grocery stores. CFB is also increasing the number of stores participating in Meat the Need.
