Connecticut Food Bank’s new GROW! Up with Good Nutrition Initiative is a new program that is working to increase the nutritional content of low-income households with children enrolled in early childhood, pre-school daycare and Head Start Programs.
The GROW! Truck is the main component of Grow up with Good Nutrition initiative and serves as a healthy “food pantry” on wheels. The customized, refrigerated vehicle has shelves stocked with food items such as fresh apples, grapefruit, oranges, low-fat milk, yogurt, peanut butter, onions, potatoes, carrots, eggs, tuna, brown rice, ground beef and fish.
Families who participate in the program have the opportunity to attend a brief workshop on healthy eating or financial literacy, such as “Enjoy healthy food that tastes great,” “Quick, Healthy Meals and Snacks” and “Eating Healthy on a Budget.” The children and their parents then board the GROW! Truck where they “shop” for healthy food items and receive information on how to prepare the foods that may be unfamiliar to them.
The GROW Up with Good Nutrition Initiaitve is made possible through a grant of $250,000 a year for three years from Our Family Foundation by Stop & Shop.
