Hunger Action Heroes honored

Connecticut Food Bank recently honored  the 2014 Hunger Action Heroes at an awards ceremony hosted by WTNH News 8’s Morning News Anchor Chris Velardi, and attended by more than 100 at the East Haven warehouse. The heroes are individuals, businesses and organizations that go above and beyond to support Connecticut Food Bank in its mission to provide nutritious food to people in need. The ceremony is held annually in September, designated as Hunger Action Month, supported by Citizens Bank Foundation. Mark Tuchmann of Cheshire was presented with The Bill Liddell Award – the highest tribute paid by Connecticut Food Bank to an individual, organization or corporation in recognition of exemplary service, ongoing dedication and significant support of the Food Bank and its mission. The award was named after Bill Liddell who supported the Food Bank by donating a total of 104 tons of fresh produce, as well as time and funds....

GROW Up with Good Nutrition initiative launched

Connecticut Food Bank is helping low-income families with young children gain access to healthy food and nutrition education through the new GROW up with Good Nutrition initiative. Thanks to a grant of $250,000 a year for three years from Stop & Shop’s Our Family Foundation, Connecticut Food Bank’s new “GROW!” Truck will travel to early childhood, pre-school daycare and Head Start Programs in Connecticut on a regular basis. The “GROW!” Truck is the focus of the program and currently visits three ABCD Head Start programs in Bridgeport.  Serving as a healthy “food pantry” on wheels, the “GROW!” Truck is a customized, refrigerated vehicle with shelves that are loaded with items such as apples, pears, grapefruit, oranges, potatoes, onions, carrots, low-fat milk, peanut butter, brown rice, tuna, ground beef and fish.
