From Executive Director Nancy Carrington

The days before Thanksgiving are very hectic and full of the unexpected. Wednesday afternoon I was covering the extended half hour that we are open for donations for the holiday. It had been a very busy day for me and I was tired. A person called for directions at 4:30, saying she would be bringing us some turkeys.

As 5 o'clock approached without that person arriving I was starting to complain to myself about how long I would have to wait beyond five. Just then the door opened. A man entered saying he was a cab driver. "Did someone call you?" I asked. “No,” he said, “I have a woman with food to give to you.” Can I take this grocery cart out to the cab?

At that, Kim Damien, our volunteer coordinator, came down the hall and they both went out to the cab. Several minutes elapsed and they had not returned. I wondered what was taking so long and opened the door to look out. A woman was limping up the sidewalk toward the door. She told me she had been praying about how she could help others this season and felt the best way was to give food to us.

Then the cart was brought in. This woman of limited means delivered four turkeys and four bags of groceries. She had paid for a taxi to drive her from New Haven to our warehouse in East Haven. I am overwhelmed by her generosity! I pray that her life be blessed as she has given so much to bless others. This memory will stay with me for a long time.

This is what Thanksgiving is all about.
